What actually loads a muscle, what merely feels like it does, and why the answer to both changes as a set progresses. Why "feeling the muscle work" doesn't mean it's working

Mechanical tension drives hypertrophy, and you have no conscious sense of it. What you can feel — burn, pump, soreness — tracks metabolite accumulation and tissue damage, which are different things that happen to occur nearby.

Why your form breaks down before you think you're at failure

Under fatigue the nervous system protects the task, not the target. The bar keeps moving because other muscles step in and the range quietly shrinks — so the reps continue while the exercise you thought you were doing has already ended.

Why range of motion matters more than the exercise you're doing

Joint angles, moment arms and where in the range the resistance actually peaks determine the stimulus. Two people running identical exercise selection can be training almost different muscles — which makes "best exercise" lists close to meaningless on their own.
